Salvation Army Opens Hurricane Relief Center at Rotterdam Corporate Park

clock September 7, 2011 12:42 by author Brooke Spraragen

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Galesi Group assists in relief efforts by providing the Salvation Army warehouse space at the Rotterdam Corporate Park.

The Salvation Army has mobilized a Hurricane Relief Center in Building 3 at the Rotterdam Corporate Park to offer assistance to victims of the recent natural disaster.

Judy Dagostino, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature said, “Schenectady County is proud to host this regional facility that will help aid those impacted by Hurricane Irene and the storm’s aftermath. We applaud the generosity of the Galesi Group for donating free space, equipment and personnel to this worthy effort.”

David M. Buicko, COO of the Galesi Group said, “We are glad to do our part to help the Capital Region respond and recover as quickly as possible. Our crews were able to move fast to get a logistics operation up and operating in Rotterdam.”

Major Mike Hines from the Salvation Army said, “As we normally don’t need an excess amount of storage area, the donation of warehouse storage is vital during times of disaster. The Galesi Group caused us to sigh with relief when we realized that we would have all of the space we could use for water, flood cleanup kits, hygiene kits, and non-perishable food storage. We are grateful.”

The Salvation Army will use Building 3 at the Rotterdam Corporate Park as a dispatch center for flood relief items such as water, food, clean-up kits, etc. Three trailer loads of material have already been received.  The Galesi Group is providing the space free of charge to the Salvation Army. In addition, Distribution Unlimited, a logistics company owned and operated by the Galesi Group, will provide volunteer labor and equipment such as forklifts to the Salvation Army’s relief efforts.

The Rotterdam Corporate Park is the largest business park in Eastern New York with more than 4 million square feet of space. The facility is located on Route 7 near the crossroads of I-88 and I-90, so the facility is an ideal location for distribution businesses. The Park is home to Railex, Golub Corporation’s Frozen Food’s Warehouse, Fedex Freight and many other businesses.

NYC Brownfield Partnership presents Harlem River Yard with the 2011 Big Apple Brownfields Award in Economic Development

clock May 13, 2011 14:03 by author Brooke Spraragen

On May 25 Tony Riccio Jr., Senior Vice President of the Galesi Group, will be presented with the 2011 Big Apple Brownfields Award in Economic Development. The award will be in honor of his work with Harlem River Yards Ventures and their efforts over the past two decades to clean up and develop the formerly hazardous unused land in the Port Morris section of the Bronx.

Prior to transforming into the Harlem River Yard Transportation & Distribution Center, the 96 acre site was the abandoned Penn Central Railyard. Harlem River Yards Ventures carried out all remediation procedures and faced the challenge of cleaning up contaminants that included abandoned underground tanks, lead and other metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons related to coal and ash, and asbestos.  The entire site was covered with fill or topsoil, and the new Harlem River Yard Intermodal Transportation and Distribution Center was built on top.

The development at this former Brownfield has resulted in creating an additional 700 jobs and a key railroad infrastructure that serves the NY Post, FedEx, and the City by providing a truck-to-rail waste transfer facility.

To date the economic impact of the development has been substantial, including:

  •  The development by the NY Post of a $300,000,000 color printing facility on 16 acres creating 400 jobs which utilizes rail for delivery of newsprint.
  • The development by Waste Management of 13 acre $75,000,000 solid waste transfer facility creating 50 jobs which utilizes rail for shipment of solid waste to out of state landfill facilities.
  •  The recent opened $50,000,000 10 acre Federal Express distribution facility which has created 274 new jobs and utilizes rail for movement of packages to the facility for distribution center.
  • The reserve of 28 acres of land for future development of a full Trailer To Flatcar Facility (TOFC) intended to ship produce from Washington State and California to the Hunts Point Produce Terminal.
  • Approximately 12.6 acres remain for future development.

The NYC Brownfield Partnership will host its third annual Big Apple Brownfield Awards Ceremony at the NYU School of Law.  The partnership will recognize five of New York City’s most outstanding brownfield redevelopment projects. Grand Opening of the new Paul Mitchell School in downtown Schenectady

clock August 6, 2010 12:31 by author Brooke Spraragen

Last night was the official Grand Opening of Paul Mitchell’s newest school located in the heart of downtown Schenectady. Those who attended the event will agree that the glamorous ribbon cutting ceremony made the city come alive for an exciting evening downtown.

Paul Mitchell has signed a fifteen year lease with the Galesi Group to occupy 20,000 square feet at 411 State Street. The project represents a nearly $2 million investment in Schenectady County.

Paul Mitchell’s campus will offer licensed programs in cosmetology and related fields. The school will employ almost 50 professionals within three years serving more than 200 students. In addition, the company plans to operate a retail store offering all of its products to the public.

After witnessing the revived “Electric City”, DeJoria explains, “what makes it work in Schenectady [is that] you have a community that is rebuilding itself. Most communities go through decay and disappear, this is being reborn again. What you have here is youth, you have excitement and you have a school that is the best hair cutting, hair coloring and business management school ever put together.”

The School owners Giulio Veglio and Dr. Giuseppe Veglio, the Paul Mitchell Staff and Future Professionals, lined up along State Street to welcome CEO John Paul DeJoria to the new school.
